Study on the Growth and Bulb Formation of Garlic Plants (Allium Sativum L.)

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different day length (8 to 12hr.), various periods of short day (8hr.) and long day (16hr.) treatment at various growth stage on the growth and bulbing of garlic. An increment of day-length treatment resulted in the increase of plant height, acceleration of bulbing, and suppression of secondary growth. In accordance with stem/bulb diameter ratio 12hr. or more was known to be the critical day-length necessary for bulbing of 6 cloved garlic. Short day promoted secondary growth and suppressed bulbing, and these effects of the treatment showed more significant results with a longer period of treatment. 16hr. day-length showed remarkable acceleration of bulbing and senescence.
